Why are Bulldogs culturally looked upon as mean, junkyark dogs?
You always see bulldogs as these angry, spiked collar junkyark dogs in all the drawings and on sports teams, but every one i've seen is calm and friendly. Are some of them bred to be like that? Where did that view come from?
Bulldogs were bred for a brutal sport called bull-baiting. This sport was very popular a long time ago in England. Bulldogs had to be vicious and tough to be in this sport. Finally, this sport was was outlawed in 1835.
A few number of people still believe they are vicious because of the sport way back in England. People also view this dog as a vicious breed because of their wrinkles. Their wrinkled face was in the breed's face because lot of blood would run onto the dogs face and into his eyes and nose during bull baiting.
Most bulldogs in my opinion are very calm and funny dogs. I agree that most are calm and friendly.
